Hervey Bay's sheltered location is the perfect holiday destination for the migration humpback whales during their annual migration.
The migration takes place from June to November annually but Hervey Bays whale season runs from July to October during the whales return journey. Peak season in Hervey Bay is during August and September. This is when the greatest number of active whales are present in the bay. However, even out of peak season, during late July and October whale watching encounters from Hervey Bay still top any experience you will find elsewhere in Australia.
- July - younger juvenile whales and females without a calf
- August - all sorts
- September - we start to see more mum and calf pairs
- October - the older, larger whales come through
