Southern Right Whales are a relatively new whale to visit Hervey Bay having only been spotted here since 2000. This is probably as a result of the population recovering from whaling and we can expect to see more Souther Rights in Hervey Bay year upon year.

The Southern right whale is just as curious and playful as the Humpbacks and you may notice the two species interacting.

Easily distinguishable from others by the callosities on its head the Southern Righ Whale also is recognisable by its broad back without a dorsal fin, and a long arching mouth that begins above the eye. Its skin is very dark grey or black, occasionally with some white patches on the belly.
